Admission conditions

You’ll be admitted to doctoral studies if you can provide proof of:

  • a relevant university degree with a standard study period of at least eight semesters, usually with an overall mark of at least “Good” if a degree other than a bachelor’s degree was awarded
    or
  • a relevant master’s degree in the sense of Section 61 para. 2 sentence 2 of the Higher Education Act, i.e. a master’s degree with a standard study period of at least two and at most four semesters, which was preceded by a bachelor’s degree, usually with an overall mark of at least “Good”

Relevant degrees include:

  • Diplom and master’s degrees in an economics-related subject from a higher education institution in Germany
  • another degree from a higher education institution in Germany in a related subject or discipline with proof that sufficient familiarity was gained with the doctoral subject during the study programme
  • a degree from a higher education institution outside the territorial and temporal scope of the German Basic Law (Grundgesetz, GG) if it has been recognised as relevant pursuant to Section 63 para. 2 of the Higher Education Act

You’ll moreover be granted admission to doctoral studies if you can provide proof of:

  • a degree with a standard study period of at least six semesters, whereby the Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentrale für ausländische Bildungswesen, ZAB) must review the equivalence of degrees obtained abroad in cases of doubt,
    and
  • a grade of 1.5 or higher was obtained for this degree
    and
  • you can demonstrate that you have completed relevant preparatory studies in the doctoral subject. These studies serve as proof of aptitude for doctoral studies. The scope and content of these degrees as well as the number and type of credits and examinations to take will depend on your studies completed to date that are relevant to your doctoral studies. Proof is deemed provided if you hold a qualification that corresponds to a relevant Diplom or master’s degree at HHU in terms of the content and requirements, and you have obtained an overall mark usually of at least “Good”
