Exam registration
The registration deadlines can be found here.
The registration period for exams in the 2026 summer semester begins on 18.05.2026 and ends on 05.06.2026.
You can register for new exams via the Student Portal under the “Prüfungsanmeldung” section.
Once you have successfully registered, a confirmation message will be sent to your university email address. You must ensure that you register during the registration period, as the system does not allow for late registration.
The registration deadlines for exams are strict deadlines. The system does not allow for late registration under any circumstances. We therefore recommend registering as early as possible, but no later than one day before the deadline, to avoid any technical issues (such as a Wi-Fi outage).
You have three attempts per module, which means two retakes. Please note that the second retake – that is, the third attempt overall – must be undertaken and passed within 15 months of the first retake. Failure to do so will result in your being de-registered.
No. Students on leave are not permitted to earn coursework credits or take exams.
Exceptions:
- Retaking exams that were not passed.
- If the leave is taken to raise children or care for family members.
(See §48 Absatz 5 des Gesetzes über die Hochschulen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen)
Exam dates
Exams for elective modules are held during two examination periods. The first examination period takes place immediately after the end of the lecture period and it lasts four weeks. The second begins shortly before the start of the following semester and lasts two weeks. Students are free to choose between the first and second examination dates. The above-mentioned registration period applies to both.
If an exam is not passed on the first exam date, the second sitting offers an opportunity to retake it (provided the module has not been failed at the final attempt).
Exams for core modules will be held once per semester after the end of the lecture period, i.e., during the first examination period.
Typically, during the first four-week-long examination period, exams for elective modules are held in the first two weeks and those for core modules in the last two weeks. Exceptions are possible.
Room assignments will be finalised after the deadline for withdrawing from the respective exams. The registration deadlines can be found here.
Withdrawl
Withdrawals are possible until seven days before the exam date without providing a reason via the Student Portal under the “Prüfungsanmedlung” section.
After that, you may only withdraw from the exam for medical reasons. This must, however, be reported immediately to the Student and Examination Administration (SPV) via email and supported by a doctor’s note. You must use the faculty’s designated form for this purpose, and it must be submitted to the SPV exclusively via email within four calendar days of the exam date. Detailed information on withdrawing from exams, as well as the form, are available via the links on the right (under "Withdrawl").
You can find the email addresses of the SPV contact persons for your degree program here.
